Chinese New Year in Hong Kong

Hi May,

How are you? I’m happy to hear from you. The weather is cold here in Hong Kong. It will be Chinese New Year next month.

Do you know anything about Chinese New Year? Let me tell you more about it?

Before New Year, we will clean the house. It is because we believe it will sweep away all bad luck. We will also decorate our house with beautiful flowers and red couplets because red stands for good luck. Besides, we will prepare a candy tray. We will put red melon seeds and coconut in it.

On New Year’s Eve, we will have a family reunion dinner. We believe it will bring family unity. We can eat lots of tasty food such as the roasted duck and mushroom for the dinner. At night, we will go to the flower market to buy some beautiful flowers.

During New Year’s Day, children usually will wear the red clothes. The married adults will give “lucky money” to the children. We believe “lucky money” to the children. We believe “lucky money” will bring us good luck. We can also eat lots of special New Year’s food like rice cakes, fried dumplings, turnip cakes and sweet rice balls. We will also watch the dragon dance, the lion dance and the fireworks display. They are wonderful.

I like watching them very much. All these are interesting to me.

I hope you can come and share the joy with us.

Please write soon and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,
Joshua
