Traditional vs. Western Culture

Theme: Lifestyle

Culture is transmitted through language, material objects, ritual, institution, and art. Culture is also the habits or customs that are common for people in the same area. Besides, it is different from place to place.

In my opinion, Chinese traditional culture is special and particular, but it is a little bit out of date. But nowadays, the western culture is blended into the Chinese culture that makes Chinese tradition more fashionable. And that is the style of Hong Kong’s people. Therefore, I consider that Chinese and western cultures complement each other to make Hong Kong a cosmopolitan city.

The different tableware makes different culture

Every country has different habits, not only in terms of clothing, but also the eating habit. For different food, we should use different utensils. For instance, we will use the knife and the fork to eat the beef, and enjoy the rice by chopsticks. Different tableware can help us eat different food more easily. Having been prepared different utensils, Hong Kong people can eat food from different countries more conveniently. Thereby, the Chinese and western cultures complement each others, making Hong Kong a cosmopolitan city.

Different colours, different meanings.

Red represents fever and passion. For Chinese, it refers to the peaceful and beaming days. Therefore, Chinese love to wear red clothes in a red-letter day. So many bridal array is red. Besides, the colour of white refers to being angelical and austere. Hence, the westerners love to wear the white bridal veil. If Chinese and western culture can complement each other, it will make Hong Kong a more cosmopolitan city.

Melodic music or peaceful music?

Chinese love to be in a quiet environment. They think the tranquil environment is comfortable. Therefore, their musical instruments are quiet compared to western cultures. On the other hand, the westerners love to make the music to be more melodic. So, when comparing these two styles of music, the western music is always louder than the former one.

Based on my viewpoint, I think the Chinese tradition culture is a little bit out of date, but it is special and unique. Also, I think if the western culture is blended into the Chinese culture, it will make Hong Kong a more cosmopolitan place. Although Chinese culture is a little bit outdated, it cannot be replaced since it still has something worth keeping.
